The Black Shuck Festival celebrates the mythologies around the famous East Anglian Black Shuck in the demon hound's natural home of Bungay. The 3-day festival, held on the first weekend in August each year, is a mixed arts festival with art, music, drama, storytelling, film and theatre which aims to not only showcase the wealth of local creative talent but to engage the local community with their mythological and historic heritage - and to encourage them to express their own creativity as part of the Festival.
We are a new Festival - 2024 was the third year of running - and have found that the theme of Black Shuck and associated stories, myths and legends, despite Shuck's evil intentions, really inspire people and contributes to their feelings of wellbeing.
The Black Shuck Festival is run by the 1577 Committee (so named after the year the famous Black Dog of Bungay wreaked such havoc in the town), who between them have, apart from a great deal of enthusiasm, what it takes to run the Festival. We aim to be as inclusive as we can be and always welcome offers of help and new ideas.
